Political Violence Addressed: 14-Month Sentence for Attacker of Ilhan Omar

Minneapolis – (WDN) – A federal court in Minnesota has sentenced 56-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak to 14 months in prison after he was found guilty of assaulting U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis on January 27, 2026.

Kazmierczak was sentenced on Thursday to 14 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, after admitting to the assault. In May, he previously confessed to attacking a federal officer. Court documents reveal that he had premeditated the assault, fueled by his political opposition to Omar’s views.

During the incident, Kazmierczak was seated in the front row of the event when he unexpectedly approached Omar. He was carrying a syringe filled with a liquid later confirmed to be apple cider vinegar, which came into contact with Omar’s clothing and skin. Kazmierczak also shouted abusive remarks at Omar before being swiftly subdued by her security team and subsequently arrested by Minneapolis police.

Fortunately, Omar was unharmed and continued with the town hall meeting despite the attack. Prosecutors indicated that the assault was not a spontaneous act. According to filings presented to the court, Kazmierczak had sent messages to at least three individuals prior to the meeting, indicating his intent to disrupt the event.

Further evidence presented to the court revealed that Kazmierczak had spoken with a neighbor about caring for his dog and had sought information regarding bail arrangements, which the prosecution argued demonstrated he anticipated being arrested after the incident.

Following the assault, Kazmierczak sent Omar an apology text stating, “I’m sorry if I scared you.” Judge Joan N. Ericksen characterized the attack as a deliberate act rather than a random occurrence, noting that Kazmierczak had obtained tickets to the meeting weeks prior.

Prosecutors also shared posts Kazmierczak made on social media, in which he criticized former President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party while expressing support for former President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Department of Justice noted that Kazmierczak acknowledged his attack was linked to his opposition to Omar’s political beliefs. Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen remarked that this case exemplifies instances where some individuals transform their political grievances into criminal acts.

Kazmierczak expressed regret for the incident during the court proceedings and extended his apologies to Omar. The new sentencing order also prohibits Kazmierczak from contacting Omar during his supervised release.

Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American congresswoman representing Minnesota, has long been a prominent figure in U.S. political debates, particularly concerning immigration and federal policies.
