Puntland Discusses New Port Fees in Bosaso

The Puntland government has for the first time addressed the new fees imposed by DP World that have caused the closure of the port and business areas in Bosaso.

The Deputy Minister of Finance of Puntland, Ahmed Yasin Salah, stated in a statement that the new fees are legal, urging traders to comply with their payment.

“We are requesting all traders to comply with the payment of the new fees intended for the development of port services,” said Minister Ahmed Yasin.

“As per the agreement, the implementation of a legal system to fund the development of the port is essential. I see any obstruction to that system as a hindrance to economic progress and the construction of the government’s economic infrastructure,” he added.

The Bosaso port has been closed for 11 days after traders importing goods refused to pay the new fees, which also led to the closure of business centers in the city today.

The closure of the Bosaso port has affected the residents of Puntland, as the prices of essential goods have risen in recent days.
