Puntland Political Council Calls for Urgent Peaceful Resolution to Kodmo Tensions

Garowe (WDN ) — The Puntland Council of Politicians and Intellectuals, composed of 26 members, has called for an immediate and peaceful resolution to tensions in Kodmo, in Rako-Raaxo District of Karkaar Region, warning that renewed armed confrontation could have serious consequences for Puntland’s security and stability.

In a statement, the council urged the Puntland administration to prioritize dialogue and consult directly with traditional elders and community leaders in the affected area, emphasizing that a negotiated settlement would be preferable to armed confrontation.

The council warned that renewed violence could not only put civilian lives at risk but also deepen internal divisions at a particularly sensitive time for Puntland.

Warning Against a New Security Crisis

The council cautioned that internal conflict could create opportunities for militant groups still operating in the Cal Miskaad mountains, allowing them to exploit political and security divisions within Puntland.

The warning comes amid continuing security challenges in parts of the region, where authorities have been seeking to consolidate state control and prevent the emergence of competing armed formations.

The council stressed that any security measures, including disarmament initiatives, must be based on broad social consensus rather than unilateral action. “Any disarmament process requires a social agreement, inclusive consultation, and clear laws to guide its implementation,” the council said.

It argued that sustainable security cannot be achieved through force alone and that community confidence and cooperation are essential to maintaining long-term stability.

Appeal to Puntland’s Leaders and Society

The council called on Puntland’s traditional elders, religious scholars, business leaders, politicians, and wider civil society to play an active role in preventing further escalation. It urged all sides to place the interests of Puntland’s peace, unity, and statehood above political or factional considerations.

The statement reflects growing concern that localized disputes could develop into broader confrontations if they are not addressed through dialogue and community-based mediation.

For Puntland, the immediate challenge is therefore not simply resolving the dispute in Kodmo, but ensuring that the crisis does not become another source of instability in a region already facing significant security pressures.

The council’s appeal ultimately centers on a simple warning: Puntland cannot afford to allow internal divisions to weaken its security institutions or create openings for armed extremist groups.

A negotiated settlement supported by traditional leaders, community participation, and a clear legal framework may offer the most sustainable path toward preventing further bloodshed and preserving Puntland’s hard-won stability.
