Somalia's Plan for JF-17 Fighter Jets Reaches Official Stage

The Federal Government of Somalia's plan to build the capacity of the Air Force and purchase JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets has reached an official stage, according to new defense reports, although the details of the agreement have not yet been fully disclosed by both governments.

Reports published in early 2026 indicated that Somalia and Pakistan were engaged in high-level talks regarding the purchase of up to 24 JF-17 Block III aircraft , with the package estimated to cost nearly $900 million .

The discussions intensified following a visit by the commander of the Somali Air Force to Islamabad.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed in January 2026 that various countries were in talks with Pakistan regarding the JF-17 Thunder aircraft, stating that the agreements would be announced once finalized.

Reports regarding Somalia's plan indicate that the discussions are focused on the JF-17 Thunder Block III , which is the most advanced version of this aircraft.

The JF-17 Thunder is a fighter aircraft jointly developed by Pakistan and China , and the Block III is equipped with advanced systems including AESA radar, upgraded avionics, and capabilities for air-to-air combat and ground target strikes.
