The Embassy of Somalia in Kenya Celebrates the 66th Anniversary of the Independence of the Northern Regions

Nairobi, Kenya – The event held in the Islii neighborhood was organized by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya, in collaboration with the Islii Traders Committee and the local community in Kenya, and was attended by officials from the Kenyan Government, diplomats, leaders of the Somali community, businesspeople, women, youth, and many other distinguished guests.

The event commemorated the 66th anniversary of the Northern Regions gaining independence from British colonial rule on June 26, 1960, when the Somali flag was first raised in the city of Hargeisa, marking the beginning of the aspiration for the unity of the Somali people.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Kenya, Jabriil Ibrahim Abdulle, delivered a lengthy speech at the event, discussing the value of freedom and the importance of the unity of the Somali people. He stated that the struggle for independence was one that required sacrifice of life and resources, and that today’s generations must uphold the unity, solidarity, and sovereignty of Somalia.

Ambassador Jabriil Ibrahim Abdulle emphasized that the commemoration of June 26 is not just a day to remember history, but a day to reflect on the struggle for freedom and the sacrifices made by Somali heroes.

“The unity of the Somali people is the cornerstone for achieving peace, development, and sustainable governance. It is our collective duty to safeguard our nationhood, strengthen our unity, and instill in the new generations a love for their country and the value of freedom,” said the Ambassador.

The Ambassador also announced that the Embassy of Somalia has officially launched the Freedom Week, stating that from June 26 to July 1, exhibitions showcasing Somalia’s business, heritage, culture, history, and progress will be held at the KICC.

“I urge all members of the Somali community and friends of Somalia to participate actively in these exhibitions, so that together we can showcase the beauty of our culture, our unity, and the progress of our country,” said the Ambassador.

On the other hand, officials from the Kenyan Government, leaders of the Somali community, and other distinguished guests who attended the event praised the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya for its prominent role in organizing this high-level event.

Finally, Ambassador Jabriil commended the Islii Traders Committee and all parties involved in the organization of this event, praising their role in uniting the community and elevating the significance of national days in Somalia.
