Five killed in airstrikes carried out by Israeli warplanes

Jun 20 (Jowhar) - Lebanese state media reported that five people were killed in airstrikes carried out by Israeli warplanes.

Just a day after a new ceasefire was announced, Israeli airstrikes occurred last night in southern Lebanon, killing five people, according to official Lebanese media.

One Lebanese soldier is believed to have been killed in the strikes.

The National News Agency of the Lebanese government (NNA) reported that Israeli warplanes carried out strikes in more than a dozen locations in the south shortly after midnight, with many attacks concentrated in the Nabatieh area and its surroundings.

The agency also reported artillery strikes by Israel targeting the city of Nabatieh and the surrounding areas - a frontline region where some of the fiercest battles have occurred in recent days.

According to NNA, airstrikes in the city of Arab Salim killed three people. One person was killed in Deir Zahrani, and another died after "enemy drones launched an attack on a motorcycle" at the entrance to the city of Dweir.

The latest violence came despite reports yesterday of a rapid ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

An American official told AFP that the ceasefire was mediated through negotiations involving the United States and Qatar after discussions with Israel and Iran, a diplomat from the Gulf confirmed the agreement.

The Israeli ambassador to the United States stated that Israel would adhere to the ceasefire if Hezbollah did the same.

Previous ceasefire announcements had not significantly curtailed attacks from both sides.
