South West’s Political Gamble: Can Reconciliation Succeed While an Insurgency Continues?

Baidoa (WDN) – South West State news President Aden Mohamed Nur (Aden Madoobe) has launched what appears to be a broad political reconciliation initiative aimed at easing divisions in the region. However, critics argue that the effort overlooks a central reality: military control alone has not ended the insurgency that has repeatedly challenged government authority around Baidoa.

Since federal-backed forces assumed control of South West State in May 2026, fighters aligned with former President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen have mounted repeated attacks on Baidoa and surrounding areas, underscoring the resilience of the armed movement despite the government’s military presence.

The latest reconciliation initiative seeks to bring together traditional elders, politicians, and community representatives from across South West State. Officials say the goal is to reduce political tensions, promote dialogue among rival clans, and bridge differences over the contentious political transition that brought the current administration to power.

Supporters view the initiative as an opportunity to foster unity and stabilize the region. Critics, however, question whether meaningful reconciliation is possible if key political stakeholders remain absent from the process.
