Turkish Army Chief Arrives in Somalia Amid Sensitive Government-Opposition Talks

Mogadishu (WDN) – The arrival of Turkey’s Land Forces Commander, General Metin Tokel, in Mogadishu on an official military visit has drawn renewed political attention as Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition leaders remain engaged in Turkish-facilitated negotiations over the country’s electoral future.

General Tokel and his high-level delegation were received at Aden Adde International Airport by the Commander of the Somali National Army’s Land Forces, Major General Sahal Abdullahi Omar. The visiting delegation was accorded full military honors, underscoring the close defense partnership between Somalia and Turkey.

The visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment, with Ankara serving as a mediator in political talks aimed at reaching a consensus on Somalia’s electoral framework. While Turkish officials have presented themselves as facilitators of dialogue, some opposition figures and political observers have questioned whether the timing of the senior military delegation’s arrival could complicate perceptions of Turkey’s impartiality.

Turkey has long been one of Somalia’s closest security partners, providing military training, equipment, strategic advice, and institutional support to the Somali National Army. Thousands of Somali soldiers have received training under Turkish programs, and the partnership has expanded to include defense planning, military modernization, and counterterrorism cooperation.
