Puntland Mourns the Passing of Beeldaaje Ahmed Mataan Hassan, a Revered Custodian of Tradition and Unity

Garowe (WDN) – Puntland is mourning the loss of one of its most respected traditional leaders following the death of Beeldaaje Ahmed Mataan Hassan, whose passing marks the end of a distinguished life dedicated to customary leadership, conflict resolution, and the preservation of Somali traditions.

The veteran elder died on Thursday in Garowe, just one day after returning from an extended stay abroad, including time in Egypt. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from political leaders, fellow traditional elders, scholars, and members of the public, many of whom remembered him as a wise mediator, a champion of peace, and a steadfast guardian of Puntland’s cultural heritage.

Beeldaaje Ahmed Mataan Hassan served as the Traditional Leader, a position that placed him at the heart of community leadership during a period of profound political and social transformation in Puntland and Somalia.

Although he was formally installed as Beeldaaje in October 2023, his influence in traditional affairs extended back many years. Long before assuming the title, he was widely consulted on matters of customary law, reconciliation, and communal relations, earning a reputation for wisdom, patience, moderation, and sound judgment.
