Reckless Convoy Sparks Gun Battle in Garowe, Raising Fears of Wider Conflict in Puntland

Garowe (WDN)- What began as the movement of a heavily armed convoy toward Garowe on Tuesday night quickly escalated into one of the most alarming security incidents Puntland has witnessed in recent months, exposing the dangerous consequences of increasingly militarized politics and the growing risk posed by unauthorized armed groups operating under political banners.

The confrontation erupted at an eastern security checkpoint outside Garowe when Puntland security forces intercepted a heavily armed convoy linked to the protection detail of politician known as “Mashruuc,” a figure aligned with political circles in Mogadishu. According to multiple sources, the politician himself was not present. Mr. Mashruuc is currently in Mogadishu. The convoy involved in the clash consisted of members of his security escort and armed supporters attempting to enter Garowe.

What happened next sent shockwaves through the Puntland capital. Witnesses reported sustained gunfire as Puntland forces confronted the convoy. Initial reports indicate that several individuals were killed or wounded, with most casualties believed to have occurred among the convoy’s armed escort. Officials have not yet released verified casualty figures. The incident immediately raised troubling questions about why such a large and heavily armed force was attempting to enter the city despite heightened security measures and ongoing political tensions.

Residents described scenes of panic as heavy weapons fire echoed across eastern Garowe. One witness said the sound of gunfire continued for several minutes, far exceeding what would normally be expected from a routine checkpoint dispute. More alarming were reports that heavy weapons were used during the confrontation. A local resident told reporters that a DShK heavy-machine-gun round struck his family home during the fighting. “The projectile entered a room where children sleep,” he said, describing a terrifying near-miss that could easily have resulted in civilian deaths.
