A major battle has erupted in the city of Baydhaba

Baydhaba (Caasimada Online) – Reports reaching us from the Bay region indicate that a fierce battle erupted this morning on the outskirts of the city of Baydhaba, the capital of the Bay region, between the forces loyal to former South West President Abdikasiis Lafta-gareen and the Somali government troops stationed in the city.

The fighting broke out after Lafta-gareen's forces launched a strong attack that began with explosions on the city, leading to a direct confrontation between the two sides, utilizing various types of weapons.

Reports further add that heavy gunfire and exchanges of fire can currently be heard inside Baydhaba, causing fear among the local population who have often been caught in the crossfire.

Additionally, it has been reported that the attacking forces used drone aircraft equipped with explosives, targeting a military camp where government troops are stationed outside the city, which subsequently caught fire, according to local sources.

The spokesperson for Lafta-gareen's group, named Ugaas Xasan Cabdi Maxamed, who recorded a video, reported on the situation, stating that they have entered the city, and the operation is still ongoing, as he put it.

“The heroes of the South West Darawiish have surrounded positions where the Salbalaar and Af-Balaar militias were stationed, and they have also taken control of many parts of the city of Baydhaba. The operation to liberate South West is ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

He also sent a message to the local people urging them not to go outside and to stay in their homes while the operation is ongoing, so they do not suffer harm from the ongoing conflict.

The situation is currently tense, and there has been no communication from the South West officials or the government regarding the fighting in the city of Baydhaba.
