The Government of Somalia Issues Statement on Referee Cartan's Withdrawal

MOGADISHU – The Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Federal Government of Somalia has issued a press release expressing its disappointment over the circumstances that caused Somali international referee, Omar Cartan, to withdraw from participating in the international football tournament taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The press release stated that the Somali government had made extensive diplomatic efforts after it was discovered that Referee Omar Cartan faced challenges related to entry approval into the United States, which ultimately led to his absence from the tournament.

The ministry indicated that it had worked on this matter with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Somalia, engaging in discussions and diplomatic contacts with the United States government and the global football association FIFA to find a solution to the referee's situation.

However, the press release noted that despite strong efforts, it was not possible to reach a resolution on this matter in time, which resulted in Referee Cartan missing the entire World Cup tournament.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports described Omar Cartan as one of the best examples showcasing the talent, effort, and resilience of Somali youth, noting that his international successes bring honor and reputation to Somalia.

The ministry also confirmed that it will continue to support Referee Omar Cartan and the overall development of Somali professionals in the sports sector, so they can benefit from future international opportunities.
