The Somali Future Council Approves a New Election Framework

MOGADISHU – The Somali Future Council has approved a new election framework aimed at transitioning the country out of the transitional phase and leading to a stable, inclusive, transparent electoral system with political legitimacy that is widely accepted.

A press release issued by the Council stated that this decision is based on political concessions and consideration of the wishes of the Somali people, in order to achieve a framework that unites society and contributes to reducing conflicts related to elections.

The Council noted that the new framework, referred to as the “Transitional Direct Elections Model,” ensures that Somali citizens can directly participate in the election of their representatives, while maintaining the representation distribution based on the 4.5 formula.

Additionally, the Somali Future Council emphasized the importance of sustaining the electoral process to achieve lasting, legitimate results and to help the country move beyond the prolonged transitional periods.

The press release also stressed that political dialogue is the most appropriate way to resolve electoral disputes and issues related to the management of the transitional phase.

Finally, the Somali Future Council called on all political stakeholders and various segments of society to support efforts to build an electoral framework that unites the Somali people and contributes to the stability and development of the country.
