Somalia Calls for Efforts to Reduce Child Poverty

SoDMA discusses the poverty of Somali children

Mogadishu, June 18, 2026 – The Chairman of the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Maxamuud Macalin Cabdulle, today participated in the launch of a high-level conference presenting the results of the Somali Child Poverty Report, organized by the National Statistics Agency of Somalia (SNBS), calling for strengthened efforts to reduce child vulnerability.

This conference is particularly important at this time, as Somalia is among the countries with the highest child poverty rates in the world. The report provides crucial data for planning programs aimed at reducing child poverty, with alarming figures regarding malnutrition and lack of access to education faced by children.

“Child poverty is one of the major challenges affecting the future of Somali society,” said SoDMA Chairman Maxamuud Macalin Cabdulle. “It is essential to have accurate data to base the planning and implementation of programs aimed at reducing child vulnerability.”

The Chairman added that SoDMA is working closely with United Nations agencies and international organizations to strengthen efforts to improve the lives of Somali children. He stated that SoDMA is ready to support the implementation of plans to reduce poverty and the impact of recurring humanitarian crises.

The conference was attended by senior officials from the government, United Nations agencies, and international organizations. Experts presented the report data, stating that a significant number of Somali children face severe malnutrition, particularly in the southern and central regions. It was also noted that the poverty rate ranges from 26% to 70% in various regions of the country.

Finally, the Chairman called for collaboration between the government, international agencies, and all stakeholders to strengthen efforts to improve the lives of Somali children and reduce the impact of poverty.
