At least 35 people have died in an armed attack on the Diori Hamani international airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger, and this attack, which occurred on Thursday, has become the second of its kind at that airport in less than five months, raising concerns about the security situation in the country.

Witnesses reported that explosions and heavy gunfire were heard as people were leaving the morning prayer. The Niger Ministry of Defense stated that the dead included 22 members of the attacking group, 11 soldiers, and two civilians. Security forces also reported that they seized weapons and explosives, including AK-47 rifles, RPG-7s, and a large amount of ammunition.

The group Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which is linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack. This attack demonstrates the continued capability of armed groups to target key government facilities in Niger, despite ongoing security efforts.

Niger has been struggling with insurgencies led by armed Islamist groups for more than a decade. Following the attack, security forces closed roads near the airport and began investigations to ensure the area's security. This attack comes at a time when security challenges are increasing in the Sahel region of Africa.
