Fifa will pay Somali referee Omar Artan his full World Cup officiating salary despite his inability to oversee any matches at the tournament, BBC Sport has reported.
The FIFA World Cup is built on a simple promise: a borderless celebration of human excellence where the only currency that matters is merit. Yet, as the 2026 tournament opens, a dark shadow has been cast over this global ideal. Omar Abdulkadir Artan, the reigning CAF African Referee of the Year and a pride of Somalia, traveled from Nairobi through Istanbul to Miami.
Omar Artan was to be the first Somali to referee at the World Cup finals. A Fifa-certified referee since 2018, Artan officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023 and was named the 2025 Confederation of African Football men’s referee of the year. Last weekend, as we know, Artan was denied entry to the United States at Miami international airport.
